Belief about Somnath Temple of Gujarat:
There is a belief about this temple that this Jyotirlinga was established by Chandradev himself. According to the Puranas, in ancient times, King Daksha Prajapati had married his 27 daughters to Chandra Dev. Chandra Dev used to love Rohini the most out of all his wives, due to which the rest of his wives started getting jealous of Rohini. When King Daksha came to know about this, he cursed Chandra Dev to end slowly. To get rid of this curse, Brahma ji asked Chandradev to do penance of Shiva in Prabhas Kshetra, after which he worshiped him by making a Shivling, that is Somnath Jyotirlinga.
The Arrow Pillar remains a mystery even today:
To the south of the Somnath temple there is an arrow pillar on the sea side. It has been mentioned in the pages of history from about the sixth century. But till date no one has been able to give accurate information about when it was made and who got it built and why? However, many scholars are of the opinion that the arrow pillar is a guide pillar. An arrow has been made at its upper end, which is facing the sea.
In this way it is written that ‘Asamudrant South Pole, till the unobstructed Jyotimarga’.
This means that if a straight line is drawn from this point to the South Pole, then there is not a single mountain or piece of land in the middle.
